With the majority of our baby preparations finalized, a long streak of good weather, an open weekend in our schedule, our love of a good party and any excuse to have a group of friends over; we decided to throw a casual back yard bbq last weekend.
We had the bbq on Sunday so we could have Saturday to get the house in order and hoping that would be a day more available on peoples’ busy summer calendars. We were a little bummed that the weather forecast for the day wasn’t going to be as good as the previous days but it turned out to be a GORGEOUS day.
I got my 37 weeks pregnant belly ready for the party…
And we had an 11:00 – 3:00 lunch bbq. We kept things simple. We did hot dogs and lemonade and asked our guests to bring a side dish. Everyone came with lots of goodies to share and we dined until we were stuffed (well, I did any way).
It was a great mix of people, coworkers from Joel’s office and long time friends. Most had kids with them so our yard got a great work out.
The kids got to run around and play, get wet and eat all the chips they could sneak while the parents weren’t looking.
The adults got to socialize. We traded stories of our kids and summer activities and Joel and I roped everyone into a discussion on baby names and joked about how I could go into labor at any second.
It was fun seeing the kids play in the pools and make use of our little digging patch.
And our magnetic mesh door got a good workout too. Who knew it’d be such a big attraction for the kiddos?
“Cheeese!” says Kera.
We set up the pools in the back of the yard and I think everyone who wanted to stay out of the splash zone managed to stay dry.
Some of the adults got to hang out and chat.
The kids got to imagine their own adventure ride on a pirate ship…. and look at our backyard neighbors’ chickens!
Some of our weekly playdate buddies got to come too, but unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of the boys all together. The only time they were all in the same shot was when they were eating!
Our spinner ride on toy was a big hit and all the kids got to take turns spinning themselves silly on it. Then there were turns with the digger and impromptu games of baseball and golf.
And the best part for us besides minimal clean up was the boys both crashed HARD and had a good nap after everyone left. Joel had to separate them since they were pretty hyped up from the afternoon but once they settled they were OUT.
Which of course meant that I got to have a great nap too! It was a perfect afternoon. Just the right amount of people, delicious food, great weather and an awesome chance to have a summer bbq and relax before we turn to newborn baby mode.
