Last Thursday I woke up with a sore neck and assuming I had slept on it wrong I took some tylenol and went about my day. By Friday afternoon my neck was so locked up it hurt to turn it and the pain was getting worse. I had trouble sleeping that night, trying to find a comfortable way to sleep. I ended up sleeping on the couch in a mostly sitting up position which reminded me of my postpartum days with the boys and then again with Alice.
It was really odd. I hadn’t had a specific moment that pulled anything or felt anything tweak, it was just getting more and more locked up.
We had plans on Saturday with friends but without much sleep Friday night and my neck still feeling the same Saturday morning I decided I better send Joel off with the kids to continue on our plans while I stayed home and tried to catch rest. I did alternating ice and heat as well as ibuprofen and tylenol. I also made a massage appointment for that night to try to work out the kink. The massage therapist recommended seeing a chiropractor, thinking that one of my vertebrae was out of alignment. I left the massage in just as much pain as when I arrived, although a bit of the muscle tightness was alleviated. With it being the middle of the weekend and not thinking I could make it until Monday to see a chiropractor we called the nurses line to get their opinion on what was happening with me. After going through all the symptoms the nurse recommended getting into a doctor to be seen and not waiting until Monday. Luckily with a visit to the doctor they diagnosed me and determined it was a bad cervical spasm and not something worse. I came home with a prescription for some good meds.
Sunday afternoon we headed over to Target to pick up my muscle relaxers and pain killers and then grabbed lunch at Mod Pizza and took it to go. Here’s where the title of this post finally kicks in. Joel made a comment that we were now a “one bench family” and I thought that was pretty cute.
We sat on the bench, the five of us, eating pizza and enjoying the sunshine. While my medicine kicked in we watch the boys play on the playground equipment and marveled at how lucky we were to be a healthy family. Having something like this happen really makes me stop to be thankful for our good health and grateful to have family around to help us when we need it.

It’s impossible to get five people on a bench in one shot!

Thank you to Joel for taking over the family duties while I tried to rest and thanks to our friends for being a good outing for the day on Saturday. My mom also came down Monday to help me with the kids so I could take my meds and get a couple naps. I’m happy to report that now late in the day on Tuesday my neck is back to being just a little tender and I should be off the meds again by the evening. It was a crazy ride that I’m glad to be off!
