We’re half way through our summer break and now is when the doldrums kick in. We’ve had endless hours in the wading pools, we’ve done a few vacations and we have some more things coming up BUT not having a dedicated schedule of stimulating activities can turn the brain to mush.
We try to catch little games here and there. Whenever I find myself with a moment and extra supplies I try to put my Pinterest ideas to use.
Two of the biggest hits lately have been alphabet hunts in the local grocery store flyer.
Graham is still very into the alphabet and is reading so this activity was perfect for him. Before tossing the circular in the recycle bin I gave it to Graham and challenged him to start at the letter A and find the entire alphabet in order. And he did it! Miles and I got in on the searching action but he really enjoyed reading words and searching for letters. You could turn this into a shapes, color, numbers or word search depending on your kids’ ability.
On a previous night the boys pointed at a bag of mini marshmallows we’ve had sitting around since the holidays and asked if they could have some. It was before dinner so the answer was no but I did need an activity to keep them occupied while I cooked soooooo
With a box of toothpicks they were off and building. Joel fed Alice dinner and supervised the building while I finished up dinner for the rest of us. Then it was time to talk about our creations and eat a bunch of marshmallows (after dinner of course).
